According to the Global Urban Competitiveness Report 2011, Kaohsiung is ranked number 123 in a comparison with 500 other cities in the world. With a total GDP of US$ 30 billion, it is at rank 110 with a GDP per capita of around US$20,000. The city ranks 162 in the Multinational Enterprise index. In economic aggregation, Kaohsiung even reaches position 37. The city has strengthened its dynamic economic activities. Not only the decision-making ability, a key factor for attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), but also the technology innovation environment, have made Kaohsiung one of the best cities in Asia with the friendliest economic environment for enhancing prosperity.
General Economic Environment
1. Exceptionally strategic geographic position
Kaohsiung City faces the Taiwan Strait on the west and is situated at the major transport junction between the Asia Pacific and South East Asia. To the south, the city links to the South China Sea and is positioned on the route from North East Asia to the Indian Ocean. Kaohsiung City is located at the center of the Asia-Pacific region and this unique geographic location is enhanced by its international airport and sea port. With only 53 hours, Kaohsiung enjoys the shortest average sea travel time to 5 major Asian ports (Hong Kong, Manila, Shanghai, Tokyo and Singapore). Furthermore, Kaohsiung is completely networked with railways, highways and mass rapid transit systems for convenient transportation. This feature makes Kaohsiung the most important gateway to southern Taiwan.
2. Traffic that extends in all directions
The main industrial parks of Kaohsiung are within a radius of 30km of the sea and airports. These include MOEA Export Processing Zone (Nanzih, Kaohsiung and Linkuang Export Processing Zone), Linhai Industrial Park, Multi-functional Commerce and Trade Park, Kaohsiung Science Park (Luchu), Kangshan Benchou Industrial Zone and Linyuan Industrial Park. It takes less than 1 hour to get from any of the industrial parks to either the sea or airports using the Zhongshan highway which is connected to Provincial Highways No.1 and No.17. Kaohsiung Harbor is the best option for petrochemicals, iron and steel products, while time-sensitive high-tech electronic products can be shipped by air from Kaohsiung International Airport to the world.
3. Diversified structure of industries
Kaohsiung has always been the heart of heavy and petrochemical industries in Taiwan. Taiwan's steel and ship-building industries are all centered here, in Taiwan’s largest industrial and processing and export region. In addition to the mature and well-developed industrial foundation of Kaohsiung, the city is actively developing in the direction of high-tech, high value-added and low pollution industries. Integrating the MOEA Export Processing Zone, Kaohsiung Software Park, Kaohsiung Science Park, Environmental Science and Technology Park of Kangshan which combined with seaport and airport, form one large cluster, making Kaohsiung the most important place for the development of semiconductor packaging/testing, electronic components, opto-electronics, information software, biotech and medical equipment, green energy, environmental protection and energy conservation, marine and agricultural biotechnology.
4. Large economic and industrial land
Industrial land can be found in various zones, including the Kaohsiung Multifunctional Economic and Trade Park (587 ha.), Lin-Hai Industrial District (1,600 ha.), Nanze Processing and Export District (98 ha.), Kaohsiung Processing and Export District (72.3 ha.), Lin-Kuan Processing and Export District (9.3 ha), and The 2nd Nanzih Export Processing Zone (8.49hectares).

There is a significant amount of incentives for the establishment of businesses that should be taken into account. The main ones are the Autonomous Statute Governing the Collection, Safekeeping and Use of the Kaohsiung City Private Investment Incentive Fund and the Kaohsiung City Regulations Governing Private Investment Incentives. 6. Abundant professional human resource
Kaohsiung City has 9 colleges and universities with more than 6,000 students graduating from them every year. More than 600 industrial and academic collaboration projects are conducted annually. Wages tend to be lower than that in Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, Korea, or Singapore, local people have a strong work ethic, and productivity is high.
7. Natural scenery
There are mountains, rivers, sea, and a warm subtropical climate with sunshine all year round.
8. Convenient and comfortable living environment
